Hot-rolled coil is a basic material in the steel industry. It is made through a high-temperature rolling process and has the characteristics of low cost, high strength, and good processing performance. It is widely used in construction, machinery, automobiles, shipbuilding and other fields.
Basic definition
Hot rolled coil (HRC) refers to steel products that are continuously rolled above the recrystallization temperature (usually >900°C) by billets (such as slabs or billets) and finally curled.
Difference from cold rolled coil: Hot rolled coil is not cold rolled, the surface is rough, the dimensional accuracy is low, but the strength is high and the ductility is good, which is suitable for structural parts manufacturing.
Characteristics | Hot rolled coil | Cold rolled coil |
Production process | High temperature rolling (>900°C) | Normal temperature rolling (cold processing) |
Surface quality | Oxide scale, rough | Smooth, high precision |
Strength | Low (but good toughness) | High (work hardening) |
Cost | Low | High |
Applications | Structural parts, pipelines, vehicle frames | Precision parts, home appliances, automotive panels |
3. Production process
Heating: The steel billet is heated to 1100~1250°C to soften it.
Rough rolling: Preliminary forming through a high-pressure rolling mill.
Finishing rolling: Control the thickness to the target size (such as 1.2~20mm).
Coiling: After rolling, it is rolled into a steel coil (usually 1~2 meters in outer diameter).
Cooling: Natural cooling or controlled cooling (such as TMCP process).
Common specifications
Thickness: 1.2~25mm (common 2.0~6.0mm).
Width: 600~2200mm (common 1250mm, 1500mm).
Material: Q235B (plain carbon steel), SS400 (Japanese standard), A36 (American standard), S355JR (European standard).
Mechanical properties: tensile strength 300~500MPa, yield strength 200~400MPa.
Main application areas
Construction industry: H-beam, steel structure, bridge, steel bar.
Machinery manufacturing: engineering machinery, mining equipment, pressure vessel.
Automotive industry: frame, wheel hub, chassis structure.
Pipeline industry: welded pipe, spiral pipe (such as API 5L pipeline steel).
Shipbuilding industry: ship plate, bulkhead structure.
